Winter Cottage Breaks in Hampshire

Work on the Estate generally fits into a rhythm aligned with the changing seasons around us. Summer is always a hive of activity with our wedding and holiday guests, but as the leaves on the trees turn to gold, the Estate settles into the calmer stride of rest and renewal.

We also think it is one of the best times to stay on the Estate: quieter, better value and the landscape at a very atmospheric part of its year.

For winter breaks this year, we’ve added a few extra perks for bookings. Enjoy a deal on private dining or discover our English wine as it’s grown and made, here on the Estate.

Family Gatherings: Abbotstone Farm House & Lake House Cottage

Autumn and winter are often the times of year when families or groups of friends generally feel a bit of flex in their diaries. Finding that weekend that suits everyone, is a smaller task to conquer. Our two larger properties are perfect for larger gatherings.

Abbotstone Farm House sleeps 18 across nine bedrooms and boasts quiet seclusion in the little hamlet of Abbotstone. Lake House Cottage sleeps 14 people across seven bedrooms and is tucked up next to the Estate’s private walled garden and pleasure grounds. Both properties have large living spaces within which to gather, celebrate or catchup over long lunches, late suppers and amusing breakfasts.

Our winter offers at either property include:

  • Private dining from Chef’s Cottage Cookery: A three-course dinner, or two courses with canapes, cooked for you at your chosen property for £30 per person. Nobody draws the short-straw on washing up duty.
  • Two complimentary bottles of our English sparkling wine, grown and made on the Estate.
  • 20% off vineyard tours and tasting at The Grange Wine. Visit the vines, learn about the wine-making process and discover why Hampshire is becoming the shining star of English Wine.
  • 10% off at West Lea Farm Shop when you spend £50 or more, for stocking the larder with good local food (not available in December)
Fireplace at The Clock Tower

Country Escapes for two to four: The Clock Tower & Garden Cottage

For romantic weekend getaways, or a quiet weekend of catching up with another couple or a few special friends, our smaller properties are hard to beat.

The Clock Tower is our two-bedroom coachman’s flat set within the Victorian Clock Tower of The Grange Stables, with a log burner and open-plan sitting room that’s cosy enough to stay put in for the duration of your stay. Garden Cottage is our one-bed farmyard hideaway that’s within walking distance of Alresford and neatly plugged into the local footpath network.

Autumn and winter stays at either property offer:

  • A chilled bottle of our PINK sparkling wine waiting on arrival, paired with some Winchester cheese and biscuits from the local farm shop. First evening sorted.
  • 10% off at West Lea Farm Shop when you spend £50 or more (not available in December)
Winter Walks

Winter Walks and Estate Activities

Set within the rolling downlands of Hampshire, the Estate is at its most atmospheric in these colder months. Below are just a few of our favourite ways to spend a winter’s day.

Walk it off. Our curated walks run from 3.5km routes along the old Festival Drive to 10km plus routes that take in Alresford and other local spots. Look out for the roe deer, hares and buzzards as you wander across the landscape.

To the pub. Several of our walking routes take in, by happy coincidence, some of our favourite pubs. The Woolpack Inn or The Bush are both well practiced in muddy boots and long Sunday roasts.

Learn about English wine. Join one of our vineyard and winery tours and tastings to see how our award-winning wine is made in our boutique winery.

Forage for fungi. Autumn is a great time for fungi but if the mycelial beings are yet to fruit, there’s plenty along the hedgerows and woods to keep Flavour Fred busy delving into our ancestral folklore or forgotten spice rack.

Pop into Alresford. The Georgian market town is a relatively short walk or even shorter drive away and is full of independent shops, café’s and interesting history. As a team, we recently completed the Alresford Spy Master Trail and had a thoroughly good time doing so.

Do very little. Sometimes, it’s fine to just do nothing. Take some time back to relax and enjoy the calmness of no tasks. (A glass of sparkling wine is highly recommended for these rare occasions).
